Inside an Artist’s Creative Process: Where Does a Drawing Artist Find Inspiration?

- As part of a series introducing the four artists behind our new website key visuals, we are excited to share our second featured artist.
  For the new key visual on our website, we invited an artist to breathe new life into a photograph by layering hand-drawn illustrations over the scene.
  In this interview, she shares her creative process, the stories behind her motifs, and where she finds inspiration in everyday life.
- What was the first thing you focused on when creating this key visual? (What did you feel when you first saw the photograph? What drew you to it?)

As I worked on this piece, the sight of the woman beginning to sketch among the houseplants made the white room seem like a pristine sketchbook, waiting to be filled. Making the first mark on a blank page can sometimes take courage. However, for this piece, I wanted to focus on the freedom and joy I have when playing in a sketchbook.
- What kind of world did you want to express by layering your illustration over the photograph? (For example, reality and imagination, everyday life and the inner self)

By layering illustrations onto the photograph, I wanted to depict a world where the imagination gradually merges with reality. A bird escapes from the page, paint spreads into the surrounding space growing into leaves and trees, and the woman finds herself immersed in a forest made of paint. Through this scene, I wanted to capture the moment when reality and imagination begin to merge.
-What meanings or emotions did you put into the motifs and colors you added?

The colors I added convey the free and organic quality of watercolor as it dissolves and flows across the page, as well as the sense of freedom I feel when playing with color and form.
For me, drawing is an instinctive, healing process that is full of discovery. Through spontaneous strokes something new is born, and with the joy I feel from how this something nourishes everyday life, I created this piece.
- -What was it like creating this piece?
  
  It was a liberating and therapeutic experience. I felt as though I had become one with the light, colors, and forms, as if I had stepped into the painting itself.
  
  -What do you feel inspiration arises in your daily life?
  
  Inspiration comes to me from many different moments in everyday life. I often find it in nature’s curious colors and forms, an intriguing sound, a harmony or rhythm I love, moments of deep sadness, or an interesting conversation overheard on the street.
  These experiences transform into colors and shapes in my head, becoming sources of inspiration for my work.
